But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin. ~1 John 1:7 (NIV)
To walk in the light is directly related to following Jesus. He said in John 8:2 “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (KJV) Our lives and our lifestyle is found in our daily walk. The choices we make can either move us closer to God or farther away from Him towards darkness. We are not only supposed to follow the light, the bible says we are supposed to be a light also. Jesus said in Matthew 5 that we are to let our light shine before men. Other versions read that we should let our good deeds shine out before others. What we do speaks. How we act is a testimony to what we believe. Scripture teaches the decisions we make directly influence others who are watching either for the better or for the worse. That is why it is so important that we learn to walk with the Lord. Our relationship with others is dependent on our relationship with Him. When we put our commitment to God first in our lives, we aren’t going to mistreat others, because we know it would not be what the Lord wanted us to do. We wouldn’t cheat others, because our relationship with the Lord is so important to us that we would not want to disappoint Him with our actions. How we interact with people is a direct reflection of our walk with our heavenly Father. Although we don’t always get it right, we should want to please the Lord in all we do, and if that isn’t our goal, we need to examine our hearts.
Have you ever made a choice that you knew wasn’t God’s will? We all have. Scripture tells us in 1 John 1:8 “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” (NIV) Praise the Lord we have God’s promise in the next verse 1 John 1:9. I don’t know very many Believers who don’t have this one memorized: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (NIV) Confessing our sins not only makes us right with God, it makes us right with one another. When we refuse to admit we are wrong and change, it not only takes a toll on our relationship with our Heavenly Father, but it also takes a toll on all our earthly relationships as well. Change is good in many ways, but especially when we are changing and conforming to the image of our Lord Jesus Christ. The only way we are going to be able to do that is by spending time in God’s presence. The Lord changes our hearts and minds in His presence. Old attitudes and beliefs that someone or something has used to taint our perceptions of the Lord and His great love for us is washed away in His presence. When that happens, we are able to go out into the world and love others as God loves us. Walk in the light today by committing yourself to your walk with your Lord, when you miss it, admit it…to God and others. God puts us on a pedestal every day to love us and to show the world His great love through us!
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. ~Matthew 5:16 (NIV)
Are you walking in the light of God’s word? What good deeds are reflecting that walk?
