From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied. ~Proverbs 18:20 (NIV)
Scripture teaches what we say has a lot to do with our quality of life. Negative words bring us down, but we can lift ourselves and those around us back up with positive words filled with hope and thankfulness. Hope and thankfulness are like salt and pepper. I have never been in a kitchen that didn’t have salt and pepper readily available for every meal. Just as we make sure our food is seasoned, we need to make sure our conversations are seasoned. Colossians 4:6 tells us “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." (NIV) Other words for “seasoning” would be excitement, flavor or even pizzazz. When was the last time you chose not to speak the first thing that came to your mind? When was the last time you asked the Lord to set a guard at your mouth? In Psalm 141:3 David says, “Take control of what I say, O LORD, and guard my lips.” (NLT) It doesn’t take rocket science for us to understand why someone would ask the Lord to help them take control of their words. Words can hurt and words can heal. Words have the power to create great destinies and words can tear people down to a point that without help they are not able to believe the good about themselves or even others anymore. Our goal as children of the Lord is to lift others out of the pit, not to put them in it with our negative words!
When we talk about our lives, our spouses, our children, our jobs, and even our friends our words should be seasoned with excitement, flavor and pizzazz! The only way that can happen is if we are thankful, if we keep our hopes up and if we learn to want God’s will more than we want our own. Have you made up your mind that you are going to be thankful no matter what life throws at you today? Are you willing to do whatever it takes to keep your hopes up in every season of life? We have to believe the Lord loves us and has a great plan for our lives every single day until the day we see Him face to face and if we do not believe that we need to start thinking about what we are thinking about. We have to be able to trust God with every person and every circumstance in our lives if we want the freedom that we need to live our lives to the fullest. We have to believe God's plan is better than anything we can come up with. What is it that is holding you back from walking in the fullness of faith in the goodness of your great God? Is it fear of lack? Then study Gods word regarding provision! Is it doubt that God is able to change your circumstances? Then study God’s word and see what He has done for His people over generations! When we know that the Lord loves us and is working in our lives then it will be reflected in every conversation we have and every conversation that we have will have a shake of hope and thanksgiving on top. Season up your conversations today, let the “harvest of your lips” be a life filled with satisfaction and blessing as you share with others your hope in the Lord and thanksgiving for all He does every day.
Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees. ~Job 4:4 (NIV)
