But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. ~2 Corinthians 11:3 (NASB)
Our relationship with God is supposed to be simple. God has created us and restored us to a right relationship with Him through Jesus. Why would He do that just to make it so complicated that we are not able to communicate with Him or experience His presence? He tells us in 2 Corinthians 11:3 that it is the enemy who tries to deceive us into believing that our walk with God has to be complicated. Take prayer for example: “Help me Lord” or “Thank you Jesus” is some of the simplest prayers we can pray and yet how often do we pray them? Why do we wait until our devotion time to lay out our well-organized list of appreciations and needs and then go about our day as if our Christian “duty” was completed? I believe God would rather hear “Help me Lord” ten times throughout the day from a sincere heart rather than our standard "religious" prayers at our one particular “prayer time”. When we get into a religious mindset, we have taken our focus off our relationship. Just like a marriage, our relationship with God requires communication and contribution, but it doesn’t have to be so elaborate that we forget what made us fall in love or why we are even together. There is work in every relationship and there is rest as well, but many of us struggle with the “rest” part. We want to be doers because that is where we tend to get our value. Just sitting alone with the Lord for a couple of hours might seem to some of us like a waste of time, but to Mary it was everything and Jesus commended her for it. Do we think He would do any different today?
Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice to redeem us and restore us from our fallen nature. He gave His life, or you could say, He gave His life to us! He gave us resurrection life. We are now righteous in our heavenly Father’s sight and that enables us to come to know Him more and more every day. Keep it simple and you will keep close to your Lord. The only one trying to complicate things is the enemy of your soul and He does it by trying to make you religious. He wants you to think about all the things you need to do, but all the things you could do for God today will not make you any more righteous than you were the day you accepted Jesus as your Savior. The enemy knows all too well that walking with God daily brings a special kind of confidence. You are a child of the King, and He wants you to share your life with Him, the ups and the downs, the successes and the failures, the good, the bad and the ugly. He wants to be your very best friend. He doesn’t want you to just call on Him in times of trouble. He wants you to talk to Him all day every day!
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. ~Ephesians 1:17-19 (NIV)
